Trust God Even When it is Difficult
We continued our look at generosity Sunday by taking a deep look at the original meaning of the word that was used by Jesus in Matthew 6:24, mammon. And what we discovered is that mammon = a false god that promises that you can trust money to give you what only God can and the root word for mammon means "what in which one trusts."
I found out this week that fearing the spread of communism, political leaders appealed to the faith of the nation to set the U.S. apart from the godless ideology of the Soviets. President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law a bill that required "In God We Trust" to be printed on all coin and paper currency on July 11, 1955.
Now I hoped it would have been an even deeper spiritual reason why we did that but I guess that it is what it is. For me it is a reminder of who I should be putting my trust in for my finances. And that it is not all about just getting or receiving but truly giving. And not just our money but all of our life, our time, our other resources and our whole self.
Remember that generosity is kryptonite to the power of mammon in our life. The more we allow generosity and gratitude, even when times are tough the greater we destroy the spirit of mammon in our life and the lives of our family. Being generous should be a motto, should be what people think about for every family.
Again, Deuteronomy 8:17-19 reminds us, “You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your ancestors, as it is today. If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I will testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.”
My prayer as we think about our own lives, families and finanances is that we will be grateful for what God has done and how generous He has been and to show gratitude for His generosity in everything we do.
Looking forward to wrapping up on Sunday and hope to see you at 9 or 10:45 am.
