A Consuming Fire Week 6 : Remember
5-Day Devotional based from the transcript of the message:
Day 1: The King We Need, Not the King We Want
Reading: Zechariah 9:9-12 Devotional: God's ways confound our expectations. The prophecy in Zechariah reveals a king unlike any earthly ruler—victorious yet humble, powerful yet peaceful. We often want a king who validates our desires and fights our battles on our terms. But Jesus comes differently. He arrives on a donkey, not a warhorse, bringing peace through sacrifice rather than conquest through violence. Today, examine what kind of king you've been seeking. Have you tried to remake Jesus into someone who simply agrees with your preferences? True transformation begins when we stop demanding God meet our expectations and instead surrender to His better way. The King you need is already here—humble, righteous, and victorious in ways you never imagined.
Day 2: From Hosanna to Crucify
Reading: John 12:12-19; John 19:1-15 Devotional: The same voices that shouted "Hosanna!" would soon cry "Crucify Him!" This shocking reversal reveals the human heart's fickleness when God doesn't perform according to our script. The crowd wanted political liberation; Jesus offered spiritual salvation. They wanted Rome overthrown; Jesus came to overthrow sin and death. When have you celebrated Jesus only to distance yourself when His path didn't align with yours? We often worship God enthusiastically when life goes well, but question His kingship in suffering. Authentic faith doesn't waver when God's methods confuse us. Today, commit to praising Jesus not only in triumph but also in the valley. His throne isn't built on your circumstances—it's established in eternity. Will you worship Him regardless?
Day 3: The Foolishness of the Cross
Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Devotional: The cross appears foolish to human wisdom. A conquering king dying as a criminal? Victory through weakness? Peace through sacrifice? None of this makes worldly sense. Yet God's "foolishness" surpasses all human wisdom. We chase power, influence, and control, believing these bring security and peace. God chose the scandal of crucifixion to demonstrate that His power operates differently. The cross exposes our self-sufficiency as inadequate and our wisdom as limited. It reveals that sin's solution isn't more knowledge or strength—it's surrender to God's redemptive love. Today, consider where you're trusting human wisdom over divine revelation. What situations require you to embrace God's "foolish" way? His weakness is stronger than your greatest strength. Trust His counterintuitive path.
Day 4: Prisoners Set Free
Reading: Zechariah 9:11-12; Luke 4:16-21 Devotional: God promises to "free your prisoners from the waterless pit" and calls them "prisoners of hope." What a beautiful paradox—captive yet hopeful! Perhaps you feel imprisoned by past mistakes, present circumstances, or future fears. Jesus came to proclaim freedom to captives and recovery of sight to the blind. His kingdom brings liberation not through military might but through the blood of the covenant. The same King who rode humbly into Jerusalem rides into your situation today. He sees your chains—addiction, shame, bitterness, fear—and offers genuine freedom. But this freedom requires surrender. You cannot free yourself; only the King can unlock your prison. Today, identify what holds you captive. Bring it honestly before Jesus. He specializes in impossible liberations.
Day 5: Enthroning the King in Your Heart
Reading: Philippians 2:5-11; Revelation 3:20 Devotional: Jesus doesn't force His way onto the throne of your life—He waits to be welcomed. The same King who entered Jerusalem humbly seeks entrance to your heart. Many build their own kingdoms with themselves as ruler, making decisions based on personal preference rather than divine wisdom. But true life, abundant life, comes only when Jesus reigns within you. What does this look like practically? It means surrendering your plans to His purposes, your timeline to His sovereignty, your comfort to His call. When Jesus sits on the throne of your heart, everything changes—your priorities, relationships, responses, and perspective. Today, conduct an honest inventory: Who truly rules your life? If it's not Jesus, dethrone yourself and crown Him King. His righteous rule brings blessings beyond measure.
