The Right Friends Week 2 : Our Best Friend
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the message:
Day 1: The Power of Godly Friendships Reading: Proverbs 13:20, 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Devotional: God often uses people to shape our destinies. Just as Samuel saw potential in David that others overlooked, we need friends who can see God's calling on our lives. Reflect on the "Samuels" in your life - those who have encouraged your spiritual growth and helped you become better. How has God used them to guide you towards His purpose? Consider also how you might be a "Samuel" to others, recognizing and nurturing the God-given potential in those around you. Pray for discernment to see others as God sees them, looking beyond outward appearances to the heart.
Day 2: Finding Strength in Spiritual Friendships Reading: 1 Samuel 23:15-18, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Devotional: In times of trial, we need "Jonathans" who help us find strength in God. Jonathan's support of David during Saul's persecution demonstrates the power of spiritual friendship. Think about the friends who have stood by you in difficult times, pointing you back to God's faithfulness. How have they helped you persevere? Consider reaching out to a friend who might need encouragement today. Remember, you may be the "Jonathan" someone else needs. Ask God to help you be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's promptings to pray for and support others.
Day 3: The Courage of Loving Confrontation Reading: 2 Samuel 12:1-14, Galatians 6:1-2
Devotional: True friends, like Nathan to David, have the courage to speak truth in love. While confrontation can be uncomfortable, it's essential for spiritual growth and maintaining integrity. Reflect on times when a friend's honest words have helped redirect you from a harmful path. Have you been willing to be that friend to others? Pray for wisdom and grace to both give and receive loving correction. Ask God to surround you with people who will hold you accountable and to give you the humility to respond well to their input.
Day 4: Cultivating Deep Community Reading: Acts 2:42-47, Hebrews 10:24-25
Devotional: The early church modeled a depth of community that went beyond surface-level interactions. In our age of digital connections, we must intentionally pursue authentic relationships. Consider the quality of your friendships. Are they helping you grow spiritually? How can you invest more deeply in your faith community? Challenge yourself to move beyond comfortable social circles and reach out to someone new or different from you. Pray for God to expand your capacity for meaningful relationships and to use you to foster a sense of belonging for others in your church family.
Day 5: Jesus, Our Ultimate Friend Reading: John 15:9-17, Proverbs 18:24
Devotional: While human friendships are vital, Jesus offers us the ultimate friendship - one that transforms us and gives us purpose. He calls us friends and invites us into intimate relationship with Him. Reflect on how your friendship with Jesus impacts your daily life and decisions. How does knowing Him change the way you relate to others? Spend time in prayer, thanking Jesus for His sacrificial love and asking Him to deepen your friendship with Him. Ask for His help in becoming the kind of friend to others that He is to you - selfless, encouraging, and always pointing towards truth and love.
